Tokens for Climate Care

SUPPORTING CLIMATE CARE THROUGH AI AND DESIGN

Austrian design studio Process has created the AI project Tokens for Climate Care, which creates original (and free-to-use) graphic symbols based on an organisation’s core mission.

Tokens for Climate Care focuses on the current and essential human task of climate care through the transformative power of design and the tools of artificial intelligence. New signs and signifiers must be developed together with our technologies to enable humanity’s evolving into a climate conscious species.

Using AI-based technology Tokens for Climate Care generates new and original graphical symbols based on a database of logos, symbols and glyphs. The output samples are accessible worldwide at www.tokensforclimate.care and may be used freely by and for initiatives for climate care.

COMMUNICATION DESIGN

For promoting the project, we created a unique visual identity. The core of the project – new visual tokens that allow for a wide range of applications – is reflected in the communication design.

In addition to a pre-defined typeface a range of new glyphs is designed, which can replace individual characters. Their aesthetics are based on those of the generated tokens and convey a look suitable for laser projection. Altering replacements for a single character will result in multiple versions of the written text (i.e. Logotype & Headlines). This allows for animation and diverse use in print and online mediums.

Big thank you to Raoul Gottschling for providing his typeface ‘La Nord’ for this project.

LONDON DESIGN BIENNALE

Process – Studio for Art and Design was commissioned by MAK Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna to realize the official Austrian contribution to London Design Biennale 2021.

For this occasion an installation version of the project was produced. Visitors can interact with it using their mobile phones. After they select a combination of three keywords the generated tokens are projected on a large circular pedestal using a single-beam laser projector.

Five fine art pigment prints on matte photo rag are mounted on the walls.

The installation will be shown from 1 – 27 June 2021 at Somerset House London and from 19 October – 21 November 2021 at MAK, Vienna.

Culture & Technology Award
Tokens for Climate Care was awarded the Culture & Technology prize as part of the Vienna Business Agency’s Content Vienna competition.
